Expectations
Before the experience, what did you think would happen?
Before my experience of creating a visual handbook for the marching band, I thought that this will be an opportunity to grow as a member in the band. Not only am I creating this handbook for the band program, but I am also showing how much I've grown in the last couple of years from being in this program. I've had some moments of authority while in marching band, but having the experience to create a handbook for my favorite activity is something that I feel like I'm going to really enjoy.
WHAT DID YOU EXPECT TO GAIN FROM AN EDUCATIONAL STAND-POINT?
From an educational standpoint, I feel that I will gain more leadership qualities, accountability skills, and obtain more information about the expectations in the marching band. By taking ownership of creating this handbook for all members, I will use former knowledge that I've learned and I will apply it for the creation of the handbook. This will also make me a better leader on the field, by incorporating that information I've had and will gain.
WHAT NEW KNOWLEDGE DID YOU HOPE TO GAIN FROM THIS EXPERIENCE?
In this experience, I really want to learn more about organizational and technology skills. In person, I am very good at communicating exactly what I want. However, through technology, it can a little but more challenging for me to do. I'm not organized through technology, but I expect to expand on this skill since I have to be detailed and thorough for my project to be exceptional. Gaining that confidence in my technological skills and paying attention to detail could help me in the future by making me a more admirable employer.
WHAT NEW RELATIONSHIPS DID YOU HOPE TO GAIN FROM THIS EXPERIENCE?
Some new relationships that I want to gain from this experience is forming a better relationship with my band directors. Since I'll be working with them to make the handbook, I expect to know more about them and how they view this band program. I'll hopefully be able to make new relationships with other band members as well. I'm hoping this will allow for collaboration with people that I've never had the opportunity to talk to. Creating these bonds with my band directors and other band members is important to me because I am going to be with them for a decent amount of time through the year (especially in the fall). By getting to know these people better, I feel like as a whole, the band program will be more successful.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOU'LL BENEFIT FROM YOUR INVOLVEMENT?
I think I will benefit from my involvement because not only am I helping out the program by making an accessible handbook that can be frequently used, but I will also enhance myself as a band member and a person. Marching band is a big time commitment for me and an activity that I really enjoy, so having the opportunity to show my understanding of the program and take a leadership role to create it will benefit my other leadership skills on the field in season.
