Explain how your experience influenced you as a person.
My experience made me realize that even though marching band is a form of art, it's really a sport as well. I, along with other 140 band members, put in so much time and effort to have fun and improve. Through my four years f marching band, I knew it was difficult and a time commitment, which some people just don't want to make that sacrifice. But by paying so much more attention to detail to be able to use words to explain actions, made me appreciate how tedious and impressive marching band is.
How did you change?
I changed as a leader, and I think I changed for the better. Because I had to explain marching in words behind a screen, I was really good at explaining marching in face-to-face conversations. I was able to be more tedious and notice small details that I never have caught before in my previous years of being a leader.
How do you see the world differently as a result of your experience?
I definitely give more credit to band directors. I know that teaching music and marching band can be a challenging task. But after my conversation with Mr. Rice, I've developed a deeper understanding of how an actual band director envisions his band. I'm hoping that my visual handbook will help them and their future bands!
How did this experience impact or reveal your character?
Even though I was very detail oriented before this experience, I feel like my attention to detail has improved because I have been practicing it for months. Even though, at times, this experience may have been challenging, it also impacted my character by teaching me to push through and keep working hard to get the end result that I want.
Was this a meangingful experience? Why or why not?
I feel like this was a meaningful experience because I got to get closer to my band directors and build a strong connection with them. By working with them, they got to see my progress and how I was improving. Overall, this was an experience I never thought I would have, but because I am so passionate about band, I got to show that through my handbook.
What new knowledge or skills did you learn from this experience?
New skills that I learned from this experience was definitely time management skills, attention to detail, and prioritizing my time for the future. Since this project had to be worked over for multiple months, developing these skills made my end product a lot better. I also finished sooner than I thought.
What would you do differently if you were to start over?
If I were to start over, I would be more organized in the beginning. I started off with a good idea and started taking notes of the basic techniques and skills that we use most frequently in marching band. However, I started to skip this step and start typing because I was really eager. I should have been more patient because I constantly jump between taking notes and typing the handbook. This extended this process even more because I would jump my focus to different areas. I am good at multi-tasking, but it was difficult for me to do steps at the same time.
