I chose Mr. Rice to be my mentor because he has had an amazing influence on my musical journey for the past four years. He was able to push me as a leader, as a musician, and as a person. I am constantly learning from him everyday. He has been the director of Bradley Bands for the past five years. He is very passionate about music and shows that everyday during either marching band rehearsal or concert band rehearsal. Mr. Rice plays the trombone and attended the Ohio State University. Before working at Bradley, he helped teach Dublin Coffman's band, where he went to high school. Mr. Rice has influenced me as a student because he has bought out the best in me. He genuinely cares for every student and sees potential in each and every one of them. He has influenced me as a student because he has pushed me as a musician and gave me opportunities that I have never had before. He recognizes my love for music, and even notices when it is stressing me out, and helps me push through to get an outcome that I hope for.
I have learned a lot from Mr. Rice from my four years of knowing him. He has taught me a lot about pushing myself and see that I can actually accomplish what I work hard for. He has also taught me that making mistakes are normal and to learn from it. This is especially important for my journey in music. As principal clarinet of the Hilliard Bradley Wind Ensemble, I have very difficult music and solos to perform. They are not perfect every time, but I should try and learn from those mistakes to make it better the next time. He has also taught me how to be more confident in myself as a musician, a leader, and a person.
